Spending as little as $ 5 a day on someone else could significantly boost happiness, the team at the University of British Columbia found.

Their experiments on more than 630 Americans showed they were measurably happier when they spent money on others—even if they thought spending the money on themselves would make them happier.

“We wanted to test our theory that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much money they earn,” said Elizabeth Dunn,a psychologist at the University of British Columbia. They asked their 600 volunteers first to rate their general happiness, report their annual income and detail their monthly spending including bills, gifts for themselves, gifts for others and donations to

charity.

“No matter how much income each person made, those who spent money on others reported greater happiness, while those who spent more on themselves did not,” Dunn said in a statement.

Dunn's team also surveyed 16 employees at a company in Boston before and after they received an annual profit sharing bonus of between $ 3,000 and $ 8,000. “Employees who devoted more of their bonus to pro-social spending experienced greater happiness after receiving the bonus, and the manner in which they spent that bonus was a more important predictor of their happiness than the size of the bonus itself,” they wrote in their report, published in the journal Science.

They gave their volunteers $ 5 or $ 20 and half got clear instructions on how to spend it. Those who spent the money on someone or something else reported feeling happier about it.

“These findings suggest that very minor changes in spending allocations—as little as $ 5—may be enough to produce real gains in happiness on a given day,” Dunn said.

1.What is the general idea of the passage?

A.The more you earn, the greater happiness you will get. B.Spending more money on yourself will make you happier. C.If you spend money on someone else, you will feel happier.

D.You can spend only $ 5 a day on someone else to get happiness. 2.The underlined word “boost” in the first paragraph probably means________.

A.help to find B.help to bring C.help to increase D.help to get

3.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Those who spend more money on others can get much more bonus.

B.People usually think spending money on themselves will make them happier.

C.Very small changes in spending your money may be enough to gain happiness.

D.Researchers think that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much money they earn.

4.Dunn is ________. A.an employee in a company B.a psychologist at a university C.a reporter in a journal D.a volunteer in the experiment

结合文章第二段中“they were measurably happier when they spent money on others—even if they thought spending the money on themselves would make them happier”可知,本文通过实验来表明在别人身上花钱可以带来更大的快乐。

答案:C

答案:A

根据文章第三段“Elizabeth Dunn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia”可知B项正确。

答案:B

B

Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name. Frequently it happens that a place has

two names:one is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits die_hard,_and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.

Many roads and places in Singapore (新加坡) are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries—in both the West and the East.

Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus—obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.

Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example. “Bras Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay (马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this

road.

A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road” for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”. This road is called a crescent (月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.

5.We learn from Paragraph 1 that ________. A.the government is usually the first to name a place B.many places tend to have more than one name C.a ceremony will be held when a place is named D.people prefer the place names given by the government 6.What does the underlined phrase “die hard” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A.Change suddenly. B.Change significantly. C.Disappear mysteriously. D.Disappear very slowly. 7.Which of the following places is named after a person? A.Raffles Place. B.Selector Airbase. C.Piccadilly Circus. D.Paya Lebar Crescent. 8.Bras Basah Road is named ________. A.after a person B.after a place C.after an activity D.by its shape

Thirteen, for me, was a challenging year. My parents divorced and I moved to a new town with my father, far from my old family and friends. I was terribly lonely and would cry myself to sleep each night. To ease my sadness, my father purchased an old horse for me at a local auction. I named him Cowboy.

Cowboy was without a doubt the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn't care. I loved him beyond all reason.

I joined a riding club and suffered rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy's looks. I never let out about how I felt, but

deep inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful, registered horses.

When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance,we were quickly shown_the_gate. No amount of preparation and love would turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the speed events. I chose the jumping race.

One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say,she didn't feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn't need to. I came in next to last.

The stinging memory of Becky's smirks made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(赛马场). We practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home totally exhausted.

All of our hard work didn't make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the course and finish in first place.

My turn finally came. I put on my hat, rubbed Cowboy's neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence,

jumped it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.

As we crossed the line the crowd was shocked into silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds!

I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds,I'd always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it.

9.The underlined expression “shown the gate” in Paragraph 4 most probably means“________”.

A.told how to enter the arena

B.shown how to make the horse beautiful C.removed from the competition early D.told to enter the timed speed events

10.Why was the writer not confident of victory? A.He was an inexperienced rider. B.He had not practiced enough.

C.He believed he was unpopular with the crowd. D.He thought his horse wasn't as good as the others.

11.When the final race finished, nobody cheered because ________.

A.the audience didn't like Cowboy

B.people envied the writer C.the win was unexpected D.the writer had run out of time

12.What did the writer learn from his experience? A.Life can sometimes be unfair.

B.Anything is possible if one tries hard enough. C.A positive attitude will bring success.

D.One should not make judgments based on appearance.

从文章第三段第一句第四段“When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance”可知作者用一匹相貌丑陋的马参加类似选美的比赛,结果可想而知,所以选C。

答案:C

根据第三段“...my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful, registered horses”可知作者因为自己的赛马没有别人的漂亮,而没有信心。

答案:D

根据文章最后一段最后一句“I realized that no matter what the odds, I'd always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it”可知。

答案:B

Youth who study just a short walk from a fastfood outlet(商店)eat fewer fruit and vegetables, drink more soda and are more likely to be fat than students at other schools, according to a research published Tuesday.

The study, which involved more than 500,000 teenagers at middle schools and high schools in California, adds new evidence to a growing backlash against the fastfood industry as studies suggest they contribute to the rising overweight in the United States.

“We've basically discovered that kids who are going to a school that is near a fast-food restaurant have a higher chance of being overweight than kids who are at a school that is not near a fast-food restaurant,”said Brennan Davis Of Azusa Pacific University in California, whose study appears in the American Journal of Public Health.

For the study,Davis and colleagues examined the relationship between fastfood restaurants located within one half mile of schools and overweight among middle and high school students in California. They took weight and dietary(饮食的) information from a statewide school survey between 2002 and 2005.“Overall,our patterns are consistent with(与„„一致) the idea that fast food near schools affects students' eating habits,” Davis and colleagues wrote. They also found that students whose schools were located near fastfood restaurants eat fewer servings of vegetables and fruits, and drink far more soda than students at schools not located near fastfood restaurants.

The study could not determine why fastfood restaurants near schools have such an influence, but Davis said a nearby fast-food restaurant is really a hang out place for people to socialize.

13.Which kid is most likely to become overweight, according to the passage?

A.One whose home is near a fastfood outlet. B.One who studies near a fastfood outlet. C.One who takes a short walk to a fastfood outlet. D.One whose school is far from a fastfood outlet.

14.The researchers believe that fast food outlets near schools can change students'________.

A.way of thinking B.eating habits C.amount of exercise D.learning ability

15.Davis believes that kids' overweight is directly related to________.

A.the distance of fastfood restaurants from schools B.how much time kids spend in fastfood restaurants C.what kids do in fast-food restaurants

D.who kids hang out with in fastfood restaurants
