21.(6分)In the last few weeks, donations have been mailed to community organizations in and near Redford Township by the sender who only identifies as
“Anonymous - 1679”, according to My Fox Detroit.
So far, envelopes, each filled with $1,000 cash, have been sent to the local library, an animal welfare non-profit, a civic and leadership training group, a credit union and the Redford Goodfellows, a group that helps needy families get holiday meals and gifts for their children.
There is one clue about the identity of the giver. According to the Observer & Eccentric, the Community Choice Credit Union in Redford received the first envelope, which also included a riddle: “Know the clue, Know the who, Anonymous - 1679.”
Spread around one community, the donations could make a serious impact. The credit union told the paper that the donation will go to their foundation, which gives up to $100,000 in college scholarships to Michigan high school graduates each year.
Tail Waggers 1990 in nearby Livonia helps owners provide for their pets, offering low-cost vaccinations, a pet food pantry and assistance for pets with serious health problems. Their donation will go toward their new animal clinic, they told Fox.
Cindy Doyle, secretary for the Redford Goodfellows, said that their $1,000 donation will likely cover food, clothes and presents for 10 families; last year the organization served 225 families total.
“That money will go a long way to brighten the Christmas of several children this year,” the Redford Township Police posted on Facebook, on behalf of their department and the Good fellows.
“To that generous person... Thank You!”
Anonymous 1679 has given more than money — he or she has also directed attention to some of the organizations helping the community, and may even inspire others to give. Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. While you’re sleeping, your brain is forming new pathways to help you learn and remember
information. Although we all know the importance of getting a good night's sleep, not all of us know the best way of getting it. A sleep expert, Phil Atherton, gave some top tips for getting the most out of the night, which will leave you ready for action in the morning.
According to Phil Atherton, not eating a large meal before bedtime is important for getting a good night’s sleep. The time difference between eating and sleeping should be at least three hours. So you'd better avoid eating any food three hours before bed, as it will lower your blood sugar during sleep and help minimize damage from too much sugar floating around.
It’s also important to find ways to prepare your body for sleep. You can follow a routine like trying not to expose yourself to too much artificial light within 1 hour before bed, as your brain uses light to help set internal “body clock”. Although it might seem unnatural to schedule your sleep, the purpose is to send a signal to your body and mind that it's time to sleep.
Another way to prepare your body for sleep is to get into a relaxed state by taking a
bath or listening to soft music. Both of them will help to take the mind off the daytime pressures.
Having a suitable bed, especially a suitable mattress (床垫), is necessary for a good night's sleep. Sleep is a personalized activity, and we all adopt different sleeping positions. Finding the mattress that suits you will reduce back pains that can result from a poor sleeping position. The bed should be four to six inches longer than its tallest user, allowing for space to move around.
The recent research is pretty clear that a good night’s sleep in a major component of good health. Since the start of the 21st century, studies have linked a lack of sleep to many diseases, such as diabetes and obesity. Taking action now will lead to long-term benefits for you and those around you.
1、What does the author intend to tell us in the passage? A.When to start a sound sleep. B.How to get a good night's sleep. C.What to do with sleep problems. D.Why to form a good habit of sleeping.
2、According to the author, before going to sleep, you’d better ________. A.free yourself from tension B.check your blood sugar C.relieve your pain in the back D.record your biological clock
3、What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.Not eating food. B.Taking a meal. C.Not sleeping well. D.Having a good sleep.

When 12 girls from San Fernando high school in California received 23.(8分)a grant (助学金) to develop an invention to solve a real-world problem, they decided to create a solar-powered shelter. Now for over a year, the girls have been working after school and over the winter and spring breaks to complete their project. “They have this amazing drive that I've never seen before, ” said Violet Mardirosian, a math teacher at San Fernando High. “I thought at the beginning that maybe some of them would give up, saying 'I didn't expect this much work,' but they don't. They're just working hard and they're not giving up.”
Living in a low-income community (社区), the girls have seen the problem of
homelessness first-hand, which is why they chose that population to create a product for. Many of them are also from immigrant families and hope the solar-powered shelter might help refugees(难民). Seventeen-year-old Maggie Mejia said that while she had no engineering experience, the girls figured out as a team how to create the prototype (雏形), using how-to videos and books that taught them how to code. But the most important lesson she's learned over the course of the project isn't technical. “I've learned a lot about helping others, helping the community and showing a better world to other people,” she said.
The girls have been invited to MIT to show their invention. Mardirosian says all the participating students have expressed interest in going into STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields and that students from lower grades are already expressing interest in being involved next year. She says, “Many of them didn't think about engineering before. They thought maybe they're not made out to be an engineer. But working together, now they realize they're all needed in this field. Everyone has found their importance in this picture.”
1、Why did Mardirosian think some girls would quit the subject? A.It was not practical in real life. B.It demanded a lot of time and energy. C.It was not supported by their math teacher. D.It required a lot of money and expert knowledge. 2、Why did the girls decide to create a solar-powered shelter? A.To save energy. C.To help the homeless.
B.To win a scholarship. D.To be admitted to MIT.
3、According to Maggie, what is the most valuable lesson she has learned from the project? A.How to code.
C.The way to teach herself.
B.The power of teamwork.
D.How to make the world a better place.
4、What does Mardirosian think of the project? A.It taught girls to be independent. C.It inspired girls' interest in STEM. engineering.
Scientists this week announced that lightning can travel much farther and 24.(8分)
B.It should be continued next year. D.It showed the importance of
last much longer than previously thought.
The conclusion is based on observations of a storm in Oklahoma that produced a lightning bolt (霹雳) nearly 200 miles long, nearly half the width of the state. The longest-lasting flash was observed in southern France, where a single flash in 2012 lasted for 7.74 seconds. Most lightning bolts last less than a second and travel only a few miles.
“We should be more aware of lightning if we can have lightning that can travel 200 miles.” said Randy Cerveny, the spokesman on weather and climate extremes for the World Meteorological Organization, which added for the first time, lightning to its list of extreme weather events. This list includes records for heat, cold, wind speed, rainfall and other events.
Scientists said that the Oklahoma lightning bolt shot from Tulsa, Okla. westward, nearly to the Texas border. It touched the ground in several places.
The lightning can start tens or hundreds of miles away and then come back to where we are. That’s why we have to be careful of where the lightning is coming to ground, even though the storm is past.
Of course not all storms have extreme lightning like that observed in Oklahoman and French storms. The Oklahoma bolt came in the midst of a particularly bad patch of weather early on June 20, 2007.
“Most lightning will strike within the 30-30 rule,” said Dr. Cerveny. “The 30-30 rule is one that we still want to stress and make sure people are aware of... but it does confirm that lightning can hit far from where the storm actually is.”
The “30-30” rule stipulates (规定) that if thunder follows lightning within 30 seconds, people should go inside for 30 minutes. If it lasts longer, it’s safe to stay outside.
Studying lightning is important because it can be fatal when it strikes. This year, 35 deaths have been blamed on lightning striker, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That’s the highest death toll related to lightning strikes in any single year since 2007, reports The Weather Channel.
Though thunder is just the sound of lightening, the rumble(隆隆声) arrives after the light flash during a storm, because light travels much faster than sound. The booming sound is a shock wave caused by the rapid expansion of air suddenly heated by the lightning holt.
1、According to the authorities, lightning may ________. A.cause as great harm as a severe earthquake B.parallel hurricanes in their harm to humans C.impact on people in a larger area than rains D.be far more difficult to forecast than storms 2、The “30-30 rule” is established to show ________. A.when we can carry out observations on lightning bolts B.what the relationship is between lightning and a storm
C.where lightning may possibly reach and cause damage D.how we might keep ourselves safe from a lightning bolt 3、We can conclude from the passage that ________.
A.the longer distance a bolt covers, the more dangerous it may be B.lightning bolts tend to take place in extremely hot summer days C.we mustn’t stop caring about the bolts until they come to an end D.where there is no storm, there is no danger from lightning 4、The passage tells us about ________. A.an application in lightning B.an update on lightning C.an experiment on lightning D.an analysis of lightning
