Although people everywhere seem to enjoy drinking coffee, they don't all have the same coffee culture. In Europe for 14、

the clock. “Oh dear! It’s a quarter past eight already.” I’ll be late for school again,” I thought. I jumped out of the bed, washed my face, and then hurried to the bus stop without breakfast. As soon as I got on the bus, it started running. “I’m sure I can get to school in time,” I said to myself. Suddenly the bus stopped. The bus driver got off the bus, then got on the bus again and said, “I’m sorry, ladies and gentlemen. There’s something wrong with the bus. Please get off the bus and wait for another one.” “I couldn’t wait. The school isn’t far. I’d better run to school,” I thought, and then I began to run. But before I got to school, it began to rain hard.

I reached the classroom but I was wet shivering with cold. The math teacher had already begun his lesson. It was Mr. Smith. He was very strict with his students and the students were a little afraid of him and so was I. I liked neither him nor his math lessons. I hesitated (犹豫) for a moment, and then I opened the door. “I’m very sorry, Mr. Smith. I’m late again,” I said with a red face.

“It’s you again, Jim,” Mr. Smith said angrily, “I’ve told you not to be late, but you...” he suddenly stopped and looked at my wet clothes. He turned to the class and said, “I’m very sorry, boys and girls. ” With these words he quickly took off his own jacket and handed it to me. “Now, take off your wet coat and put on this one or you’ll catch cold,” he said kindly.

I went to my seat with Mr. Smith’s jacket on. It was a bit larger for me but I felt very warm in it. I found, for the first time, math was so interesting and how well I could understand it!

18、In one way of thinking, failure is a part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider story” is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times without success. On the seventh time he made it and went on to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat the English... Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.

So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top from yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?

Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question, “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?” This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway.

The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to “live with yourself” even though you may have failed. Remember, “You can’t win them all.”

1.The “spider story” mentioned in the passage is used to show that _________. A.only failure can lead you to success B.we can make it if we keep trying C.failure is always terrible

D.people who fail have the same experience

2.The underlined phrase “bear in mind” in the last paragraph means _________. A.take care B.forget C.recognize D.remember

3.The writer tells us to do all the things when dealing with failure except ________. A.thinking about how it happened

B.believing that we can’t live happily if we fail

C.considering failure as a part of life

D.checking out whether our goals are right for the present situation 4.The main idea of this passage is _________. A.what the value of failure is

B.that Edison and Bruce failed repeatedly before success C.what failure is and how to deal with failure D.failure may be considered as a way towards succes Ⅴ.书面表达 19、写作

I’m sorry to know that you’re having such a bad time at the moment. Your problem is a common one among middle school students,so you don’t have to worry so much. The important thing is to learn to control your temper so that you may not do or say anything you’ll regret. Here are three useful tips:

First, talk to someone you trust about how you feel. This is a good way of speaking out your anger without hurting others or yourself. Second, go outdoors and play games with your friends as physical exsercise can help you forget your anger and calm down. And third, remain hopeful about your future. It will help you cheer up and move on. I hope you’ll soon feel calmer and carry on as usual. Yours, Jamie
