Some people make you feel comfortable. You can easily spend an hour with them and feel
asif you have known them your whole life. These people, who can make others feel relaxed, havegreat people skills and if we observe them we can learn a lot.
How do they do it? Here are several ways to put others at ease so you can make friendsquickly.
First of all, good talkers ask lots of questions. Almost anyone, no matter how shy he or she is,will answer a question put to him or her. One well-known businesswoman says: “At businesslunches, I always ask people what they did that morning. It’s a common question, but it will getthings going.” From there you can move on to other matters – sometimes even to really personalquestions. How he or she answers will let you know how far you can go.
Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. This point seemsobvious, but it is important to remember that your questions should have a point and help youunderstand what sort of person you are talking to. In order to find this out, you really have to listencarefully.
Real listening means not changing the subject of conversation. If someone sticks to one topic, you can take it as a fact that he or she is really interested in it. Real listening also means not justlistening to the words, but also to how the person is speaking. What is their tone of voice? If theysound bored then it might be time for you to change the subject.
Finally, good talkers know how to end a conversation. If you’re saying goodbye to someone, shake his or her hand and say: “I’ve really enjoyed meeting you.” And if you want to see thatperson again, don’t keep it a secret. Let them know, and they will walk away feeling as if they’veknown you their whole life.
21. What is the article mainly about? A. The skills needed to be a good talker. B. What to do when making friends.
C. How to be a good listener.
D. How to start a conversation with a stranger.
22. Why is it important to listen when talking to others? a. To decide how far your conversation can go. b. To find out more about the person you are talking to. c. To show the person how much you like him or her. d. To make sure that the person agrees with your point. A. a, b B. a, c C. a, d D. b, d
23. To be a good talker, you are advised NOT to __________. A. ask many common questions B. change the subject frequently C. listen to the answers carefully D. ask any personal questions
B
Have you ever been stuck for hours on a hard math problem? If you sat there for some timeyou might eventually solve it, but scientists say that daydreaming might be a much better way totackle difficult tasks.
In fact, daydreaming has long been misunderstood. It’s considered to be a bad thing and oftenassociated with laziness. “We’re harsh (严厉的) on ourselves if we catch ourselves mindwandering,” says Professor Kalina Christoff from the University of British Columbia in Canada.
But the truth is that some of the most important scientific discoveries came about becausescientists allowed their minds to wander. For example, Albert Einstein began his theory ofrelativity (相对论) when he daydreamed about riding a beam (束) of sunlight to the edge of theuniverse. And now, research has shown that normal people can also improve their
problem-solving ability in the same way, reported The Telegraph.
In a study, 145 people aged between 19 and 32 were asked to list as many unusual uses aspossible for everyday objects. Some of them were given a 12-minute break while the others werenot allowed any break from the task. People on the break did not simply relax – some of themwere told to carry out a tiring memory task while others did an easier task.
Scientists found that people who did the easier task were daydreaming a lot. They thoughtabout personal issues (问题) in the past or in the future because their mind was at ease (放松的).
After the break, all participants were asked to return once again to the task of listing unusualuses for everyday objects. It was found that daydreamers improved their performance by 40percent, while all the other people, including those who didn’t have a break and who did tiringtasks during the break, performed the same as before.
“People assume that when the mind wanders away it just gets turned off – but we show theopposite,” explained Christoff. “A more playful attitude might allow you to call in more resources(解决办法).” So when you are struggling to solve complicated problems, it might be better off ifyou switch to a simpler task and let your mind
According to Christoff, people typically (通常地) spend one-third of their waking timedaydreaming. “It’s a big part of our lives, but it’s been largely ignored by science.”
24. It was believed that daydreaming _______. A. was a good way to relax and solve problems B. had something to do with imagination C. had been misunderstood for a long time D. was a waste of time when the mind was shut off
25. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 3? A. To inform us that daydreaming has its benefits. B. To show that great scientists daydream a lot. C. To prove people can daydream whenever they like. D. To introduce new experiments on daydreaming.
26. What did the scientists discover in the experiment? A. People’s minds turned off as they daydreamed.
B. The group that were given hard memory tasks performed best. C. Daydreaming could improve people’s problem-solving abilities. D. People who had a break showed improvement in the task.
27. How did the scientists get their conclusion?
A. By comparing the performances of different groups. B. By studying brain scan (扫描) results of the groups. C. By asking and observing people in different groups. D. By analyzing (分析) the amount of tasks each participant did.

In the children’s story Pinocchio, the wooden boy’s nose grows longer when he doesn’t tellthe truth. The story has since been used as a warning by parents to stop their children from lying.
But believe it or not, this old fairy tale has some truth in it, because a new study shows thatyour nose can give you away if you lie. However, instead of growing longer, researchers say ournoses heat up if we tell tall tales.
Live Science reported that while the change of body temperature is difficult to see with thenaked eye, heat cameras can help us identify it. Researchers from the University of Granada
inSpain introduced thermographic (热感成像的) cameras into their experiment. These kind ofcameras were first used in wars to search for people because it can detect (探测) the heat comingfrom human bodies. This is the first time that it has been used in psychological (心理学的)research.
Watching the participants through the thermographic camera, researchers soon noticed thetemperature change on their faces – when they told a lie, their nose started to heat up, as well asthe muscles around the inner corner of their eyes. They also found that people’s faces got hotterwhen they were feeling anxious, and cooler when they did difficult mental tasks.
This change in temperature all comes from a part of the brain called the insula (脑岛). Here’show it works: The insula controls both our emotion (情绪) and body temperature. When we lieabout our feelings, the insula is activated (激活), causing our face temperature to rise, especiallyaround our nose.
In fact, the “Pinocchio effect”, as it has been called, is just a part of the researchers’ studyabout how our body temperature changes with our mental states. Empathy (移情作用), forexample, can also be detected this way.
In the experiment, researchers showed a video of a person getting an electric shock in the arm.Among all the people who watched this video, researchers found that those who were highlyempathic would get hotter in their arms. This means that they were feeling the other person’s pain.
28. What is main purpose of the research mentioned in the article? A. To test the “Pinocchio effect”.
B. To find out the link between lying and face temperature. C. To see how anxiety affects body temperature.
D. To find out the link between body temperature and mental states.
29. What does the underlined phrase “give you away” mean?
A. show the truth B. give a warning
C. hide your feeling D. change its temperature
30. According to the study, when people tell a lie, __________. A. they must feel anxious B. they must feel ashamed C. their noses change size D. their insula becomes active
31. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Thermographic cameras are often used in psychological researches. B. When a person feels worried, his or her face temperature drops. C. The insula is activated when we start doing hard mental tasks.
D. Highly empathetic people’s body temperature changes when they see others’ pain.

第二节(满分30分)(one possible version)
Though my mom always spares no effort to help remove any obstacle in my way, personally, I think the fastest way to grow up is to allow me to struggle by myself.
One Friday, we were informed that an oral English contest would be held in our city. The news thrilled me greatly. I was very eager to win, so I felt very nervous. Then my mom told me one of the judges was her schoolmate and that she could call him up. I knew it might be easier for me to win with just a phone call, but it was just unfair. I might come across some difficulties but if I couldn’t overcome them by myself, I wouldn’t deserve the success. I persuaded my mom not to do so and took up the challenge bravely. After careful preparation and countless practice, I finally made it. At that moment I felt so proud of myself.

W: I’d like to try, but my parents disagreed with the idea. They explained the dangers of hackers and bad guys who pretend to be people they are not.
M: That might be true. Of course online chatter isn’t always so harmless. But you can tell if you keep your senses about you.
W: I guess so. Anyway I was not born yesterday.

M: Great party, isn’t it? By the way, I’m Tony.
W: Yes, it’s a fantastic party. I’m Lenore. Nice to meet you. M: You too. Are you from America?
W: Actually. I was born in Germany, but I grew up in New York. How about you?
M: Oh, I grew up here in Portland.
W: So you are local boy. I’m an art teacher at Grant High School.
M: Really? I’m an art student in college here. I’ll graduate this year. There’ll be an exhibition for my graduation next week. I have a couple of paintings in it. Would you like to come? W: I’d love to.
M: Great. The first day is on Monday. It’s at the Art College. Do you know here it is? W: Yes, in fact it’s near where I live.
M: So why don’t we meet at the main entrance of the college at seven? W: Sure. I look forward to it.

When my husband was out of work, we put our house up for sale. Three weeks later, it was still on the market. I became a busy housekeeper. Every room had to be kept tidy, and dishes had to be washed and put away when used. Then one day the doorbell rang unexpectedly at 8 am. Sleepily, I opened the door and saw our agent standing there with a couple from New York. “There was no time to call”, he explained, “because the couple has to catch a plane home.”
The three people made their way past the dirty breakfast dishes on the kitchen table and into a bedroom with unmade beds. As I retreated into a bathroom to comb my hair, I heard the man saying something to his wife. Then they both laughed.
Two days later, the agent phoned me that the couple had bought the house. He repeated what the buyer had said when he handed over the check the following day. “That house was a warm, lived-in house, just like ours.” 第二节到此结束。
