Ⅰ.Teaching aims and demands a. Knowledge objects:
(1)Vocabulary: opinion, pressure, sress, push, cause, common, typical, development, cut out, compare..with, continue , compete, training...so that, until, although...
(2)Sentence structures: it’s +adj. for sb.to do sth. I don’t think ….I believe...Why don’t...people should/ shouldn’t...
b. Ability objects:
(1) Students are able to guess the meanings of the words in the context .
(2) Students are able to sum up different people’s opinions about after-school activities with
certain sentence structures, such as ...... believe / really want/ think/ should.../Why not... (3) Students are able to infer people’s opinions or intention with the key sentences.
c. Moral object:
Students know the common problem both in China and America, they have a proper attitude for the after-school activities and understand their parents more, think of the ways for how to keep a balance between study and relaxation.
Ⅱ. Teaching procedure
(Before class, the teacher devides the students into several groups, each group has 6 or 7 students, during the class, the students who answer the teacher’s questions correctly can get 1 point for their group. ) (课前,教师根据学生人数把学生分成几个小组,每组6-7人,上课过程中,回答教师问题正确的学生,每答对一题,小组得1分。)
Step1:Pre-reading (1)Greetings.
Greet the new students and give them an introduction about myself and introduce about my daughter’s after-school classes.
T: Hello, everyone! Nice to meet you. I’m very glad to see you today. First, let me introduce about myself. I’m from Wuhan No.6 Middle school, and my name is Kevin.
Look, here is a photo I took last week. You can see a little girl in my arms right? Who is she? (Ss: your daughter) Yes, she is my daughter. What do you think of her? (Ss: cute, lovely...) Thank you. Can you guess:how old is she? (Ss: 4,5,6...)Yes, she’s only 6.
Although she’s very young, she’s good at a lot of things, such as roller skating, dancing, drawing, playing the drums and so on. But you know, nobody was born with so many skills, children have to learn. So I have to send Yoyo to many after-school classes.
Look at here, this is Yoyo’s Time Table, you can see she’s very busy, right? She has 2 after-school classes on weekdays, and 4 classes on weekends. Weekends are even much busier than weekdays!
What about you? Are you the same as Yoyo? Do you also have so many after-school classes?

Play a game “That’s me” to activate the class. T: Now, let’s play a game “That’s me”. Let me show you an example:
When I say: Yoyo does her homework after school. If you do your homework, too, you stand up and say loudly “That’s me”. Are you clear? Now I say the first one: Yoyo plays computer games. Ss: That’s me! Thank you, sit down please. Yoyo plays sports. Ss: That’s me! Yoyo takes after-school classes. Ss: That’s me! Yoyo hangs out with friends. Ss: That’s me!......
Ok, I know most of you have to take classes after school.

Give students 3minutes to read the whole passage quickly and finish the mind map of paragragh 1 by thinking of 2 questions.
T: It’s very common to have after-school classes in China. “Common” means you have , I have, we all have. It’s usual. (板书:Language points:1. common = usual) What about foreign students? Are they also tired? Do they also have many after-school classes too?
So today we’re going to read a text about it. Please open your books , turn to page 30 and read the whole passage.
I’ll give you 3 minutes to read it, and try to answer the following questions.
① What classes do children learn? ② Why do they learn?

What does “so that” mean? Can you change it into another word or phrase? Yes, it means “in order to” or “for” ,on purpose. (板书:2. so that = in order to = for) Can you read the whole sentence with “in order to” and “for”? I have another question, I don’t know the word “compete”, can you tell me
the meaning? Ss: it means 竞争。How do you know that? When we read an article, it’s common to meet some new words that we don’t know, if we can’t look them up in the dictionary, what can we do? Ss: Guess! Yes, but how to guess? Ss: according to the context.(上下文)。Yes, let me show you some tips for guessing the meanings. Take “compete” for example, here we can see “and”, A and B means A is very similar to B, so Compete and Win, Compete is very similar to win, win means the best, No.1, so compete means “try to be the best or the first one”. (板书:3。 compete =win=try to be the best or the first one)
OK,it’s your turn! Have a try please! What’s the meaning of “training”?Ss: it means “practice”(Ask the students to explain how to guess it) (板书:4. training= practice)
(利用2个问题完成第一段思维导图:孩子们课后学什么?为什么学?讲解语言知识so that,并让学生进行词汇替换的口头练习加深对连词的理解和熟练使用;接着自然地将猜词策略介绍给学生,通过“and”表示并列关系来猜,给出一个示范“compete”再让学生练习一个“training”巩固教学效果。)
2. Careful-reading
Give the students 3 minutes to read P2,3,4 carefully and finish 3 tasks. You can guess the meanings so well. Now I’m sure you can understand
the text better. You see, I’m a very typical Chinese mother, busy and tired all the time because of my daughter’s too many after-school classes. What about American mothers? What do they think? Now please look at your work sheet in your hand. Here is a chart. Please read P2,3,4, there are 3 people giving their opinions. Please circle them out and write down their names one by one below “Who”. This is your first task. Task 2 is that you should underline the key sentences in the text about “what are their opinions”, Task 3 is that some of the people give their advice, please underline the “advice”. Are you clear? 1. Who 2.Opinion 3.

Now, who can tell me Cathy Taylor’s opinion? You can just read your underlined sentences of what she says. Ss: Maybe I could cut out a few of their activities......Yes, good! Now let’s read the sentences together! So after reading, you tell me: “Cut out” means...? Ss: it means stop, delete. (板书5:5. cut out =stop doing, delete, give up) Will Cathy Taylor cut out any activities? Ss: No,she won’t. Why? Ss: Because she believes these activities are important for her children’s future. 的观点。训练了学生提取信息并读懂作者意图的能力,同时锻炼了概括归纳的表达能力。在梳理文章框架的同时,兼顾了对语言知识点“cut out”的讲解以及阅读技巧的渗透,尽可能让学生在语篇中学习新词汇和句型,加深对文章的理解和知识点的运用,相辅相成。) 2)Paragragh 3: Linda Miller’s opinion and advice
Now, who can tell me Linda Miller’s opinion? Ss: Mothers send their small kids to all kinds of classes......Yes, excellent! So Linda Miller thinks it’s crazy to compare their kids with other kids. She doesn’t think it’s fair. What’s the meaning of “compare”? “with””fair”...(利用肢体语言去比划)Yes, it means the same or different. We look for the similarities or the differences between A and B.(板书6:compare...with...比较) So does Linda Miller give us any advice? Ss: ...Yes, She says “why don’t they just let their kids be kids? Now here comes an expert----Dr. Alice Green. What does she say? Does she agree with Cathy or Linda? Does she agree or disagree to have too many after-school classes? Ss: Disagree! Yes, right. She has the same opinion as Linda. She says too much pressure is not good for children’s development, all these activities can cause a lot of stress for children. Ok,
can you find another word here has the similar meaning to “stress”? Yes, it’s “pressure”.(板书:7.stress= pressure press means 按,pressure means 压力。)What about “development”?It’s something good or bad?Yes, something good. We’ve learned “develop”, it’s a verb, means grow up, become bigger or better. “development” is its noun.(板书:8. development发展) They mean the same. So does Dr. Alice Green give us any advice? Ss: ...Yes, She says “Kids should have time to relax and think for themselves, too. Although it’s normal to want some successful children, it’s even more important to have happy children”. (逐条在PPT中显示opinion 和advice的重点句型和关键词,构建文章框架及细节。) “Although”means 尽管,表示意思转折。(板书:9. Although尽管) So having happy children, or having successful children, which one is more important? Yes, happy! So Dr. Alice Green thinks it’s more important to have happy children than have successful children.

Ask the students to read after the teacher to review the whole passage, and the students can learn good examples for how to use the sentence patterns to express opinions.

Cathy Taylor couldn’t cut out her children’s after-school activities, because she believes they’re important for her children’s future, and she really wants them to be successful.
Linda Miller thinks it’s crazy to compair their children with other children,
she dosen’t think that’s fair. Why don’t let kids be kids, parents shouldn’t push their children too hard.
Dr. Alice Green thinks too many after-school activities can cause stress, it’s not good for children’s development. Children should have time to relax and think, Being happy is more important than successful.
