He had saved the life of someone with the same illness. The article said Dr Debakey’s fees were very high; Aunt Edith couldn’t possibly pay for them. But could he tell her of someone whose fee she could pay?

So Aunt Edith wrote to him. She simply listed her reasons for wanting to live : her three children , who would be on their own in three or four years and among them a little girl who always dreamed of traveling and seeing the world . There wasn’t a word of self-pity, only warmth and humor and the joy of living. She mailed the letter ,not really expecting an answer.

A few days later, my doorbell rang. Aunt Edith didn’t wait to come in : she stood in the hall and read aloud: your beautiful letter moved me very deeply. If you can come to Houston, there will be no charge for either the hospital or the operation.

Signed : Michael Debakey That was seven years ago. Since then ,Aunt Edith has been around the world . Her three children are happily married. For her age, she is one of the youngest, most alive people I know.

It sounds like a dream: sucking up diamonds with a vacuum cleaner(吸尘器). Yet that or something very similar is what is happening off the coast of southern Africa. The vacuum cleaners are not quite like the one your mother uses, since they suck up mud off the floor of the ocean, but then the operators clean up in quite a different way. The diamonds are on the seabed off the very dangerous Namaqualand Coast, which is hit by great surf(激浪) all year round. The diamonds were left there on what sailors call the “Skeleton Coast” over millions of years. They came down with the water of two rivers, the Orange and the Buffalo, and there they are, waiting! However, the recovery project to get the diamonds has their problems, one of which is that they demand a great deal of courage from the divers. Divers always face dangers in these waters, but to get the diamonds, they must also dive into deep caves which may suddenly fall down. In fact, several divers have died in this way.

After the mud is vacuumed up, it is transported in plastic bags from the ship to shore where experts make the diamonds from it. Most of the ships used are old and were not intended for this kind of project. The equipment onshore is just as old and rough. In fact, there is something like the California Gold Rush of 1849 about the whole situation.

Concerning the business aspect, though, the project is a dream, too. The diamonds the divers discover are worth literally millions of pounds every month — and there are probably enough diamonds to keep operations going for several decades.

41 The vacuum cleaners mentioned in the passage ________. A. are the same as the ones used at home B. are used to discover diamonds in rivers C. help the divers work more safely

5

D. bring up special mud from the seabed

42. The underlined word they in Paragraph 2 refers to ________. A. sailors B. diamonds C. surfs D. divers 43. What can we learn about the recovery operations to get the diamonds? A. Divers should be very brave. B. There is no danger to divers. C. Divers are unwilling to dive. D. Several divers die every month. 44. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ________. A. the ships used are old but specially designed B. the tools used in the project are quite simple C. many people are flooding there from California. D. the divers work under the water with plastic bags 45. What’s the passage mainly about?

A. Divers dangerous work B. Gold Rush in Africa

C. A special way to gather diamonds D. A dream that is hard to realize. 第二节:信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
