5.1TestingMachine,conformingtotherequirementsofandhavingthecapabilitiesofthemachineprescribedinTestMethodD1002.Likewisethegripsarecapableofsecurelygraspingthespecimenthroughoutthetestwithoutallowingthespecimentoslip.Thegripsarealsoself-aligning.
5.2Temperature-ControllingEquipment,capableofmain-tainingthetesttemperatureto63°C.Ifambientlaboratoryconditionsareemployedthesamedegreeofcontrolisrequired.6.TestSpecimen
6.1Makespecimensthatconformtotheformanddimen-sionsshowninFig.1.ItisrecommendedthatthetestspecimensbecutfromthetestpaneldepictedinFig.2,butindividualspecimensmaybepreparedifpreferred.Therec-ommendedmetalsubstrateisAlloy2024-T3aluminum,1.560.1mm.AsurfacetreatmentsuchasMethodAofPracticeD2651isrecommendedforthealuminum.Ifametalsubstrateotherthanaluminumisemployed,thenoneoftheothersurfacepreparationsinPracticeD2651issuggested.Therecom-mendedlengthofoverlapis12.560.2mm.Thethicknessof
theplasticinthemetal/adhesive/plastic/adhesive/metalsand-wichconfigurationmayvarydependingonthetypeandmanufacturerbutthinfilmsof0.35mmorlessarerecom-mended.Anupperlimitof1.560.1mmplasticthicknessissuggested.
6.2Thesurfacepreparationusedontheadherenddependsonthesubjectplasticadherend.Methodssuchasthoserecom-mendedinPracticeD2093serveasausefulguide.
6.3Applytheadhesiveinaccordancewiththemanufactur-er’srecommendations.Choosetheadhesivesuchthatthecuretemperaturedoesnotadverselyaffectthemechanicalproper-tiesoftheadherend.
6.4CuttestspecimensfromthebondedpanelspicturedinFig.2.Cuttingthespecimensmustbeaccomplishedwithoutoverheatingorotherwisephysicallydamagingtheadherendorbondedinterface.Individualtestspecimensmayalsobepreparedifdesired.
7.Procedure
7.1Conditionthetestspecimensfordefiniteperiodsoftimeunderspecifiedconditionsbeforetestingifdesired.Afterconditioning,itisrecommendedthatallspecimensbestabi-lizedinthetestenvironmentfor1hbeforetesting.
7.2Placethetestspecimensinthegripsofthetestingmachinesothattheappliedloadcoincideswiththelongaxisof

thespecimen.Loadthespecimentofailureatarateof80to100kg/cm2ofshearareaperminute.
NOTE2—Thethicknessoftheplasticinsertusedwillinfluencethejointstrengthsobtainedinthistestduetotheaddedoffset.Thermalstressesintroducedinthejointbyelevatedtemperaturesbondingdissimilarmaterialswillalsooffsetultimatejointstrength.Directcomparisonofresultsispossibleonlyforthesamethicknessandcompositionofinsertsoastominimizedifferencesresultingfromoffsetorthermalstress.
