阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。

A

Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity. I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day’s events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn’t accumulating memories a way of preserving the past?

When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well-equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen„

At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary.

Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often—only of objects I find really beautiful. I’m no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.

22. What caused a change in the author’s understanding of keeping a diary?

A. A dull night on the journey.

B. The beauty of the great valley.

D. Her concerns for future generations.

C. A striking quotation from a book.

23. What does the author put in her diary now?

A. Notes and beautiful pictures.

B. Special thoughts and feelings.

C. Detailed accounts of daily activities. D. Descriptions of unforgettable events. 24. The author comes to realize that to live a meaningful life is ______.

A. to experience it

B. to live the present in the future D. to give accurate representations of it B

One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods from door to door found that he had only one dime left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.

However, he became nervous when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”

“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied, “Mother has taught me never to accept any pay for a kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the human race. He was about to give up and quit before this point.

Years later, the young woman became seriously ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists could be called in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous, was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to her case.

高2017级(英语试题)第 2 页 共 6 页

C. to make memories

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she was positive that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words,

“Paid in full with one glass of milk.” (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently, “Thank You, God. Your love has spread through human hearts and hands.” 25. After finishing the milk, the boy .

A.felt angry because he was really hungry B.regretted that he didn’t ask for any food C.felt more hungry than ever before

D.had a stronger faith in God and the human race

26. The underlined word “baffled” in Para. 4 probably means .

A.puzzled

B.excited

C.amazed

After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper (蚱蜢) eat leaves? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?”

This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours. 

Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical(符合逻辑的), complete and creative answers.

Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion, don’t jump in with “That’s right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That’s interesting” or “I’d never thought of it that way before”, or coming up with more questions or ideas.

Never push a child to “Think”. It doesn’t make sense, for children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What’s more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller target (目标) for your disagreement.

Lastly, show; don’t tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass(放大镜), and they’ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates (蒸发), set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.

29. According to the passage, children are natural scientists, and to raise their interest, the

most important thing for adults to do is . A. to let them see the world around B. to share the children’s curiosity C. to explain difficult phrases about science D. to supply the children with lab equipment

30. In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the word “lists” could best be replaced

by .

A. any questions B. any problems  C. questions from textbooks

D. any number of questions

D.encouraged

27. What did the local doctors finally do when the young woman became seriously ill?

A.They looked on indifferently.

B.They asked for Dr. Howard Kelly’s help. C.They sent her to a hospital with specialists. D.They believed that her faith in God would cure her.

28. Which of the following statement is RIGHT according to the passage?

A.The young woman knew that Dr. Howard Kelly would help her and save her life. B.The doctor walked away the moment he heard the name of the town she came from. C.The doctor saved the woman’s life and paid off the bill.

D.We shouldn’t ask for help because one day we will pay a lot for it.

C

Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there’s no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children’s curiosity. Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another in silence. Finally I said, “Now that we’re finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”

31. According to the passage, children can answer questions in a more logical, complete

and creative way if adults . A. ask them to answer quickly

B. wait for one or two seconds after a question

C. people in the world once rushed to America because of its unique culture

D. the American family members don't get along well with each other

D. wait at least for three seconds after a question

32. The author mentions all of the following techniques for adults to share with their

children’s curiosity except that adults should . A. tell their children stories instead of reciting (背诵) facts B. offer their children chances to see things for themselves C. be patient enough when their children answer questions D. encourage their children to ask questions of their own

D

American culture is unique because it is formed and developed under certain conditions. The major factors contributing to the making of this new nation and the forming of a new culture are the hard environment, ethnic diversity (多样性;差异) and plural religion, which is quite different from other nations in the world. What is more, these elements are still influencing the American culture.

The early immigrants who were English Puritans settled down in northeast part of America from 1607 to 1892. Frontiers were pushed further west. The frontiersmen looked for a land of rich resources and a land of promise, opportunity and freedom. Actually they looked for a better life. So individualism(个人主义), self-reliance, and equality of opportunity have perhaps been the values most closely associated with the frontier heritage of America.

In history, people from different countries in the world rushed to America three times. They brought their own culture to America and later on, different cultures were mixed together. Thus the unique American culture was formed, a common cultural life with commonly shared values.

The fundamental American belief in individual freedom and the fight of individuals to practice their own religion is at the center of religious experience in the United States. The great diversity of ethnic backgrounds has produced religious pluralism(多元化); almost all of the religions of the world are now practiced in the United States.

Nowadays, we can see the continual influence of the three elements in the current American society. American family is typically parents and their unmarried children. Middle-aged and elderly people generally do not live with their married children. The people in America have a very strong desire to start a new life in a new place. Quite a number of people change residences every year. The average American moves fourteen times in his lifetime.

33. We can learn from this article that ________.

34. What's the author's attitude towards American culture? A. He is critical of it. C. He just states the facts.

B. He admires it very much. D. He looks down upon it.

\"The exact cause of this condition, often called seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder(SAD), is not known yet,\" says Chen Jue, associate professor(副教授)at Shanghai Mental Health Center, \"But recent studies indicate that weather change is influential and strongly suggest that this condition is caused by changes in the availability (获得) of sunlight.\"

One theory is that with decreased exposure(暴露)to sunlight, the biological clock that controls mood, sleep, and hormones is delayed, running more slowly in winter. 37 Another theory is that brain chemicals that transmit(传输) information between nerves may be changed in individuals with SAD. It is believed that exposure to light can correct these imbalances.

Personally, in order to have a brighter future, we should try our best to be
