Learning New Things is Fun!
Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 9 years old. I just finished 3rd grade and I can't wait for summer vacation! School is great because that's where I learn all sorts of awesome new skills. I want to tell you about some of the coolest things I've learned how to do.
One of the first big skills I remember learning was how to ride a bike without training wheels. I was pretty nervous at first because I didn't want to fall over and get hurt. But my dad helped me practice in the park near our house. He ran alongside me holding onto the back of the seat. Once I got the hang of balancing and pedaling, he let go and I was riding all on my own! I felt so free and grown up. Now I can ride my bike all around the neighborhood with my friends.
Reading was another big skill I had to learn. It was really hard at first with all those letters and making them into words. My mom would read me stories every night before bed and point out the letters and words. Then I started bringing home books from school to practice with. Slowly but surely, I got better and
better at reading. Now I'm one of the best readers in my class! I love getting lost in adventure books and using my imagination. In 2nd grade, we started learning how to write stories and essays. It was tricky figuring out how to put all my thoughts into words and make them flow together nicely. My teacher Miss Martinez would have us plan out our ideas first by making outlines or mind maps. Then we'd write rough drafts and she would help us edit them. I had to really concentrate on using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation and all that stuff. After doing a good final draft, I felt so proud to have written a whole story or essay all by myself! Writing is one of my favorite things to do now.
This past year in 3rd grade, we did a whole unit on computer coding which was crazy fun! We used little robots and had to give them step-by-step instructions through coding to get them to move around and do different tasks. At first the codes didn't always work right and we had to figure out where the bugs were. But soon I got pretty good at it. Coding is sort of like giving the robots their own language to follow. I can't wait to do more coding and maybe even make my own computer games someday!
Speaking of technology, I'm also getting really good at using computers, tablets, and smartphones. I have my own tablet that I use for homework, games, watching videos, and all sorts of other cool stuff. My dad taught me about internet safety though, like not giving out personal information or clicking on weird links. I'm proud of myself for being responsible with technology.
Another awesome skill I've worked hard on is my art ability. I just love drawing, painting, sculpting with clay, you name it! I'm always doodling pictures on my notebooks and making art projects. My favorite is painting because I can blend so many colors and really let my creativity flow. I enter my best artwork into shows and contests. Just last month, I even won a prize for my watercolor painting of a sunflower! I'm thinking of being an artist when I grow up.
Of course, I've also learned loads of academic skills in subjects like math, science, history, and more. Math was kind of tough for me in the beginning with counting, adding, and subtracting. But I just kept practicing and it finally started clicking. Now I'm amath whiz and can do multiplication, division, fractions, telling time, and all that multiplying stuff. Science is cool because we get to do experiments and learn about how the world works. In history, I love hearing all the stories from the past
about famous people, inventors, explorers, and events that shaped the world we live in today.
Sports and fitness are other areas where I've picked up mad skills. I started taking swimming lessons a few years ago and now I'm like a little fish in the water. I can do the backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, you name it! I'm also a beast on the soccer field. I worked really hard on dribbling, passing, shooting, and running like crazy. All that practice paid off because I scored a ton of goals for my team last season! I'm thinking of trying basketball next because I've gotten pretty good at dribbling and making layups during gym class.
Even basic things like learning good manners and how to follow rules and directions have been important skills. My parents are always reminding me to say please, thank you, excuse me, and treat others with respect and kindness. At school we have behavior rules about listening to the teacher, keeping our hands to ourselves, walking in the hallways, and being a good friend. It's not always easy, but I'm doing my best to be a well-behaved, polite young lady.
As you can probably tell, I've learned SO MANY awesome skills these past few years! Every day I get to learn and try new things. Some skills were challenging at first, but if I never gave up
and kept practicing, I was able to get better and better. My brain is like a little sponge just soaking up all this new information and abilities. I feel like I can do almost anything I set my mind to if I work hard enough. Learning is just the best!
Well, that's all I've got for now. Time for me to go play outside and put my running and jumping skills to use! Let me know if you want to hear about any other skills I've been working on. For now, sayonara! Thanks for reading!
