My Idea of a University Arts Festival
Life on campus is really interesting. There are a lot of performances and extracurricular activities. But among these, the arts festival has gained more and more popularity among college students in recent years. I’m glad to hear that an arts festival will be held next semester by our Students’ Union. Many students have presented a lot of ideas on how to organize this festival or what should be included. Personally, I think an arts festival can include lectures and games.
Lectures on what students are interested in should be included in the arts festival. Generally, students are busy with their lessons and homework, and seldom have opportunities to listen to speeches by celebrities from big companies and organizations. Students’ Union can invite successful people in the business world and some distinguished educators, and provide students a chance to have face-to –face talks with them. Students will definitely benefit a lot form the guests. Games are another integral part of arts festivals, because almost every students can take part in them and enjoy themselves. Students may be asked some questions on Olympic Games or some other questions on Chinese or foreign cultures and history. Not only can students put what they have learned into practice, but also they can broaden their horizon.
To sum up, the arts festival at college and universities makes our campus life meaningful and colorful. It would be better if there are lectures and games in the
next arts festival. I look forward to the arts festival and wish it a great success.

Using Tomorrow’s Money
A survey conducted by a Beijing information company shows that 67% of the respondents think saving money is a good habit instead of using tomorrow’s money. It is really hard to make a decision between saving money for tomorrow and using tomorrow’s money today. But for me, it is wiser to use tomorrow’s money.
First of all, we can realize our dream as early as possible. As a city dweller, we have to buy a house or an apartment to live in. but as the price in housing is rocketing recently, or an apartment. That means you have to wait for thirty years u a common worker, as one survey shows, will pay thirty years’ salary for a house ntil you save enough money to buy one. In this case, it is a good idea to borrow money from the bank and buy the house you need.
Second, using tomorrow’s money will make us feel great pressure. We have to make enough money so as to pay for the monthly loans. As the saying goes, pressure is motivation. It is motivation that will keep us from becoming lazy and less ambitious. And it will make us put all our energies into our work.
All in all, using tomorrow’s money helps us to enjoy this civilized world better.

Is it Wise to Make Friends Online?
With the rapid development of information technology, computers are widely used in our daily life. Popularization of Internet is also in the full swing. Making
friends online becomes a fashion among young people. Whether it is wise to make friends through Internet is hotly debated. Different people have different opinions on this topic. Personally, I think it is not wise to make friends by chatting on the Internet.
In the first place, people who want to make friends online are prone to be cheated. Cable space is a virtual world to which everyone can gain access. However, in most cases, we cannot get the true information of others, neither can we distinguish the real identity of the person we are chatting with. For instance, you are told that you are chatting with a pretty girl age only 20, but actually the pretty girl may be a woman over 20 or even older. Even worse, the person who has claimed that she is a girl may turn out to be a man.
Second, online friendship seldom stays long. Without knowing the appearance, education background etc. of a person you often chat with online, you establish a friendship with him or her. On impulse, you may arrange an appointment with your net friend. But5 when you meet up, you feel surprised and even depressed only to find that he or she is not the type you like the friendship fail s since then on.
Third, making friend online may make you get addicted to the Internet. To find a friend, you have to spend a lot of time surfing the Net and looking for the person who meets your taste. Too much time will be wasted chatting online.

The Benefits of Volunteering
Nowadays, although people are busy at work and have few spare time, tens of millions of people around the world have volunteered to help those in need. Why do so many people participate in the volunteering works? It’s because this work
brings benefits to the volunteer and the society. As Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” For my part, volunteering work can benefit us in several aspects.
Firstly, on a purely psychological level, volunteering make us feel good about ourselves. There are few things more satisfying than helping people helping the elder carrying the heavy bags while she beams with praise right next to you is an amazing feeling. Walking or running to raise funds for the people in a poor region or a disaster are helps to give you a sense of honor. Being a volunteer helps you realize just how lucky you are.
Secondly, volunteering can add to your skills. There is no greater way to expand your skills than by volunteering. Before doing the job, I usually take some training so as to offer better service to others. Even if we’re serving on a conference, and not doing anything tangible, we are still adding skills by interacting with the participants and professionals from all over the world.
Thirdly, volunteering activities can expand our network and let us make more friends. A good network is of great value to all of us. It’s always helpful to have people we can call on for help in our job. The more people we know, the more opportunities there are for us.
All in all, volunteering is very beneficial to people. There are still a lot of other benefits you can find in your volunteering work. It will be a different experience for everyone because it’s very personal.

Will Tourism Bring Harm to the Environment?
Last week, I was going through The Sunday Times, when a news story caught
my eye. A local government in Yunnan got rid of a forest for the building of a tourist resort. As a result, a rare species of wood crane was rendered homeless. Despite the effort by the locals, these birds still extinguished. It is, indeed, a typical example to show that tourism does do harm to the natural balance of environment.
To begin with, over-expansion of tourism is, of course, destructive to the environment. As it brings huge tides of tourists and certainly big revenues to scenic spots, devastating pollution comes along. Such increased amount of exhaust as released from air travelling and vehicles are the worst results, not to mention other wastes brought along by tourists themselves. Secondly, too much traveling causes irreparable damages to the non-renewable resources of nature. Once exhausted, these resources can be in no way reproduced. Finally, excessive tourism disturbs harmony between humans and natural environment, posing a big threat to their own existence. That is why we see, in so many resorts, polluted rivers, dirty air and “while wastes”.
As vacations come, and we are working out a big plan to go somewhere, we should keep in our mind the risks posed by excessive traveling so that we can do it in a restrained way.

Should College Students Hire Cleaners?
Recently there is a report in a newspaper that six student who share a dorm at a local university hired a cleaner to do laundry and cleaning once a week. And each of them paid her 60 yuan a month. Faced with the new inclination among our college students, different people hold different opinions. Some students think that hiring cleaners as away to obtain efficiency should not be accused while some
believe that it is a pretense to escape from responsibility. As far as I am concerned, the college students should not hire cleaners.
First of all, for each college student sharing a dorm with 4 or 5 roommates, there are at most 3or 5 square meters of space for him or her, including the space in the corridor. Keeping such a small space tidy and clean is a piece of cake for any college student; the labor involved in the process is minimal, so is the time required. In addition, it is not just a matter of labor but a matter of habit. Developing the habit of undertaking responsibility is really of great importance to college students. Finally, since students do not earn money, hiring cleaners for this little thing is a waste of money.
In a word, we’d better do cleaning by ourselves rather than hire cleaners because it only takes a little part of our time and we can arrange our study as long as we make full use of our time.

Should private car owners be taxed for pollution?
With the development of society, many people can afford a car. As the number of the cars is rising, we are facing some problems. One big problem is the pollution caused by the use of cars. In order to solve this problem, government agencies in some big cities recently suggest that a “pollution tax” should be put on private cars in order to control the number of cars and reduce pollution in the city. For my part, I agree to this viewpoint, and my reasons are as follows:
To begin with, cars contribute to the environmental pollution. For example, a lot of big cities in China are now plagued by serious air pollution. Then it is the responsibility of these private car owners to pay for the pollution and they should be taxed. The purpose of collecting environmental pollution tax is to raise the fund, and then utilize the tax revenue lever to protect our environment.
Secondly, it is a good way to raise people's environmental awareness by putting a pollution tax on private cars. If people suffer from the financial loss when making a decision, they will think more about their decision. Then they will consider more when deciding to buy a private car. Consequently, the increase rate of the number of the private cars can be controlled.
In a word, it is a very good and necessary attempt to use the means of taxation to treat the pollution. Of course, it must be kept in mind that all people, including the private car owners, should try their best to protect the environment.

The Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar. This festival is to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, an upright and honest poet and statesman who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.
The most important activity of this festival is the Dragon Boat races. It symbolizes people's attempts to rescue Qu Yuan. In the current period, these races also demonstrate the virtues of cooperation and teamwork.
Besides, the festival has also been marked by eating zong zi (glutinous rice). Zong zi is made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in
bamboo or reed leaves. People who mourned the death of Qu threw Zong zi into the river to feed his ghost every year.
With the changes of the times, the memorial turns to be a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of year. People will hang healthy herbs on the front door to clear the bad luck of the house. Although the significance of the festival might be different with the past, it still gives the observer an opportunity to glimpse a part of the rich Chinese cultural heritage.
