听力原文: How to Save Money Saving money is one of those tasks easier said than done—everyone knows it’s smart to save money in the long run, but many of us still have difficulty doing it. Today’s lecture will provide you with a clue to money saving. [1]First always spend money on absolute essentials first. When it comes to spending money, there are some things that you absolutely, positively cannot do without. [2]These things, namely, food, water, housing, and clothing, are your first priority when it comes to spending your cash. However, just because things like food, water, and shelter are important doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to splurge on them. [3]For instance, cutting down on the amount that you go out to eat is one easy way to drastically reduce your food expenses. [4]Along the same lines, moving to an area with cheap rent is a great way to spend less on housing. [5]Next, save for an emergency fund. If you don’t already have an emergency fund with enough money in it so that you can survive if you suddenly lose your income,
begin contributing to one immediately. [6]Having a reasonable amount of money stockpiled in a secure savings account gives you the freedom to comfortably sort out your affairs in the event that you lose your job. After you cover your essentials, you’ll want to devote a chunk of your income to building up this savings account until you have enough saved to cover about 3-6 months of living expenses. [7]Besides giving you the peace of mind of knowing that you’ll be OK in the event of career difficulties, having an emergency fund can also earn you money in the long run. If you lose your job and you don’t have an emergency fund, you may be forced to take the very first job you’re offered, even if it doesn’t pay well. On the other hand, if you can survive without working for a while, you can afford to be much pickier and potentially land a better-paying job. In addition, put away money next. If you’ve established an emergency fund and paid off all (or nearly all) of your debt, [8]you’ll probably want to start putting your extra money in a savings account. The money you save this way is different from your emergency fund—whereas you’ll want to avoid dipping into your emergency fund unless you absolutely have to, [9]your normal savings are available for big, important purchases, like repairs to the car you use to drive to work. However, in general, you’ll want to avoid using your savings so that, over time, your total savings grow. [10]If you can, try to devote at least 10-15% of your monthly income to your savings starting in your 20s—most experts agree that this is a healthy goal. There’s more to saving than simply spending less money, although this alone can be challenging. Most people can save something regardless of their income. Start to save a little each day.

Are you interested in joining the race?M: Yes, we want to enter a team but we don’t know anything about it. Could I ask you for some more information first? W: Of course.M: I don’t even know when it’s being held. W: It’s taking place on the 2nd July. M: Right. And where’s it being held? W: At the Brighton Marina. You take a right turning off the coast road or you can cycle along the seafront. M: What time does the race start? W: Well, [2]the first heats begin at 10:00 am—you need to register half an hour before that—9:30 and we really recommend that you aim to be there by 9. It’s a good idea to arrange a meeting place for your team. M: Right. And the race is to help raise money for charity? W: It is. We’re asking every team member to try and raise $35 by getting friends and/or relatives to sponsor them. [3]Every crew member will receive a free tournament t-shirt if your team manages to raise $1,000 or more. M: Oh that’s quite good. What do you advise people to wear? W: Well, [5]most people wear a t-shirt, shorts and trainers. I certainly wouldn’t recommend that you wear jeans or boots. What’s your name and I’ll get your conference bag.W: Well, I haven’t actually registered yet. I was told I’d be able to register today, so I hope that’s OK. I’ve just arrived in Melbourne. M: That should be fine, if you’re a student. I’ll need to take your details though. So can I have your full name? W: Yes, sure. It’s Melanie Mitchell. I am a student at Sydney University.M: OK. Now do you want to attend all three days? The conference runs from Thursday to Saturday. W: Yes, I think so—if I can afford it. What does it cost? M: Well, you’re eligible for a student discount, [7]which makes it $15 for a day registration or $40 for the three days, though it is possible to register for half a day only. M: Well, we have several levels of accommodation. You can share a room with another student for $25 a night. Or you can have your own room but share the bathroom—that’s $45. W: Right.M: Or you can have a single room with your own bathroom. W: I don’t mind sharing a room. On second thoughts, yes I do. [8]I’ll have my own room, but I’ll share the bathroom. M: Right now a couple of other things—there are a number of special interest groups organized—they’re known as SIGs and
you’re asked to nominate your preference. They’ll take place on the Friday afternoon and Saturday morning but [9]they’re filling up quickly which is why you need to nominate now. W: Right. What are the SIGs? M: Well, there are six altogether. Let’s see, on Friday you have a choice between Computers in Education or Teaching Reading Skills... or a session on Catering for the Gifted Child. W: Oh they all sound interesting but technology in the classroom is really my area of interest rather than reading, so I’ll go for that. I can probably read up on the gifted child topic myself. M: Right. And then the Saturday options are: a session on Cultural Differences; or there’s Music in the Primary Curriculum or you could go to the one on Gender Issues in the Classroom. W: Wow! Can I go to them all? They all sound fascinating. M: I’m afraid not. W: Well, [10]I am really interested in how boys and girls behave differently, even when they are very young, so I’d better opt for the third session. M: Right!
