Over half of Americans give a few hours a week to help in their communities, their churches, or in their children’s schools. These people are volunteers. Today we’ll get to know two of them.

Jude volunteers for “Meals on Wheels”. On Tuesdays, he sends hot meals to people. At 11:30 on Tuesday morning, he drives to a church hall and picks up the meals. He drives to 11 homes in his town. Most of the people live alone, but there are a few couples. Many of the people are older, and most of them are over 80. they can’t cook because they have back or leg problems. Jude says hello and talks for a few minutes. It takes Jude about two hours to send the meals.

Maria volunteers at Children’s Hospital on Thursday afternoons. Some of the children have serious illnesses. Some have mothers who are unable to take care of them. The babies need lots of love and attention. She holds the babies, feeds them, talks to them, and sings to them. Maria says, “I give them love, and they give me love in return. ”
