A method of improving the signal-to-noise ratio of noisy electric signalvariations, more specifically for measuring the back-scatter signal of optical wave guides,the back-scatter signal being averaged and subsequently time-expanded and thereaftertransmitted as an at least partial segment of the variation of the overall back-scattersignal variation in accordance with the desired resolution, characterized in that an
analogue storage chain (1) comprising a plurality of consecutively driven capacitive storesin accordance with the desired resolution, is used as an averaging and time-expandingmeans, and that for this averaging operation the analogue storage chain receives a sumsignal (U1 ) of the back-scatter signal (Us ) which is always present in the measuringperiod and its instantaneous memory content (U2 ) and the memory content whichconstitutes the sum signal is read destructively (erasibly).
