第三部分:阅读理解(第一节10小题,第二节5小题;每小题2分,共30分)

第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。

A

The case for college has been accepted without question for more than ageneration. All high school graduates ought to go, says conventional wisdomand statistical evidence, because college will help them earn more money, become \"better\" people, and learn to be more responsible citizens thanthose who don't go.

But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone. And now that close to half our high school graduates are attending, those who don't fit the pattern are becoming more numerous, and more obvious. College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis; college students interfere with each other's experiments and write false letters of recommendation in the intense competition for admission to graduate school. Others find no

stimulation(激发,刺激) in their studies, and drop out—oftenencouraged by college administrators.

Some observers say the fault is with the young people themselves—they are spoiled and they are expecting too much. Others blame the state of the world, and they are partly right. We have been told that young people have to go to college because our economy can't absorb an army of untrained eighteen-year-olds. But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no longer absorb an army of trained twenty-two-year-olds, either.

Some adventuresome educators and watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may not be the best, the proper, the only place for every young person after the completion of high school. We may have been looking at all those surveys and statistics upside down, it seems, and

through the rosy glow(美丽光芒) of our own remembered collegeexperiences. Perhaps college doesn't make people intelligent, ambitious,

happy, liberal, or quick to learn things—maybe it is just the other wayaround, and intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, quick-learning people aremerely the ones who have been attracted to college in the first place. Andperhaps all those successful college graduates would have been successfulwhether they had gone to college or not. This is hard to believe for those ofus who have been brought up to believe that if a little schooling is good, more has to be much better. But contrary evidence is beginning to mountup.

56.According to the author, ___.

A.people used to question the value of college education. B.people used to have full confidence in higher education. C.all high school graduates went to college.

D.very few high school graduates chose to go to college.

57.According to the passage, the problems of college education partly resultfrom the fact that________.

A.society cannot provide enough jobs for properly trained graduates. B.High school graduates do not fit the pattern of college education. C.Too many students have to earn their own living.

D.College administrators encourage students to drop out.58.In this passage the author argues that___.

A.Intelligent people may learn quicker if they don't go to college. B.College education is not enough if one wants to be successful.

C.College education benefits only the intelligent, ambitious, and quick-learning people.

D.more and more evidence shows college education may not be the best thing for high school graduates

B

Which is safer---staying at home, traveling to work on public transport, orworking in the office? Surprisingly, each of these carries the same risk, whichis very low. However, what about flying compared to working in the chemicalindustry? Unfortunately, the former is 65 times riskier than the latter! In fact, the accident rate of workers in the chemical industry is less than that ofalmost any of human activity, and almost as safe as staying at home.

The trouble with the chemical industry is that when things go wrong they often cause death to those living nearby. It is this that makes chemical

accidents so newsworthy.Fortunately, they are extremely rare. The most famous ones happened at Texas City (1947),Flixborough (1974), Seveso (1976), Pemex (1984) and Bhopal (1984).

Some of these are always in the minds of the people even though the loss of life was small. No one died at Seveso, and only 28 workers at

Flixborough. The worst accident of all was Bhopal, where up to 3,000 were killed. The Texas City explosion of fertilizer killed 552.The Pemex fire at a storage(储藏) plant for natural gas in the suburbs of Mexico City took 542lives, just a month before the unfortunate event at Bhopal.

Some experts have discussed these accidents and used each accident to illustrate a particular danger. Thus the Texas City explosion was caused by tons of ammonium nitrate(硝酸铵),which is safe unless stored in greatquantity. The Flixborough fireball was the fault of management, which tookrisks to keep production going during essential repairs. The Seveso accidentshows what happens if the local authorities lack knowledge of the danger ontheir doorstep. When the poisonous gas drifted over the town, local leaderswere incapable of taking effective action. The Pemex fire was made worse byan overloaded site in an overcrowded suburb. The fire set off a chain reactionsexploding storage tanks.Yet, by a miracle, the two largest tanks did not

explode.Had these caught fire, then 3,000 strong rescue team and fire fighterswould all have died.

59.Which of the following statements is true?

A.Working at the office is safer than staying at home.

B.Traverlling to work on public transport is safer than working at the office. C.Staying at home is safer than working in the chemical industry. D.Working in the chemical industry is safer than traveling by air.

60.Chemical accidents are usually important enough to be reported as newsbecause ____.

A.they are very rare B.they often cause loss of life

C.they always occur in big cities D.they arouse the interest of all thereaders

61.From the discussion among some experts we may conclude that ____. A.to avoid any accidents we should not repair the facilities in chemical industry

B.the local authorities should not be concerned with the production of the chemical industry

C.all these accidents could have been avoided or controlled if effective measure had been taken

D.natural gas stored in very large tanks is always safe

C

So great is our passion for doing things for ourselves that we are

becoming increasingly less dependent on specialized labour. No one canplead ignorance(对。。。无知) of a subject any longer, for there arecountless do-it-yourself publications.Armed with the right tools andmaterials, newlyweds(新婚的人) gaily get down to the task of decoratingtheir own homes.Men, particularly, spend hours of their leisure timeinstalling their own fireplaces, laying out their own gardens; building garagesand making furniture. But unfortunately not all of us are born handymen. Some wives tend to believe that their husbands are extremely resourcefuland can fix anything.Even men who can hardly drive a nail in straight aresupposed to be born electricians, carpenters, plumbers andmechanics. When lights fuse, furniture gets rickety(快要散架的), pipes getblocked, or vacuum cleaners fail to operate, some woman think that theirhusbands will somehow put things right. The worst thing about the do-it-yourself game is that sometimes even men live under the delusion(错觉)that they can do anything, even when they have repeatedly been provedwrong. It is a question of pride as much as anything else.

Last spring my wife suggested that I call in a man to look at our lawnmower. It had broken down the previous summer, and though I promised torepair it, I had never got round to it.I would not hear of the suggestion andsaid that I would fix it myself. One Saturday afternoon, I dragged themachine into the garden and had a close look at it.As far as I could see, itneeded only a minor adjustment: a turn of a screw here, a little tighteningup there, a drop of oil and it would be as good as new.Actually the repair jobwas not quite so successful. The mower firmly refused to mow, so I decidedto take it apart. And I was extremely pleased with myself.I had found thecause of the trouble. One of links in the chain that drives the wheels hadbroken. After buying a new chain I was faced with the tough task of puttingthe confusing jigsaw puzzle together again.I was not surprised to find thatthe machine still refused to work after I had reassembled it, for the simplereason that I was left with several curiously shaped bits of metal which didnot seem to fit anywhere.I gave up in despair. The weeks passed and thegrass grew. When my wife urged me to do something about it, I told her thateither I would have to buy a new mower or let the grass grow.Needless tosay our house is now surrounded by a jungle(丛林).Buried somewhere indeep grass there is a rusting lawn mower which I have promised to repairone day.

62.According to the passage which of the following is true?A.If you have right tools and materials, you can do anything.

B.Although they can hardly drive a nail in straight , they are supposed to beborn electricians, carpenters, plumbers and mechanics.

C.All wives believe that their husband can fix anything.

D.we have great passion for doing things for ourselves because we arebecoming increasingly less dependent on specialized labour.

63.Why did the writer’s wife suggest calling in a man to look at the mower?A.To get her husband to mend it, believing that he needed some help.B.She had forgotten that her husband had promised to mend it.

C.She suspected it would otherwise remain unrepaired and the grassuncut.

D.Her husband had repeatedly tried mending it already without success.64.The writer decided to take apart the mower because _____ .A.it was a Saturday and he had the time to spareB.he had discovered the cause of the troubleC.he thought it was a sure way of repairing it.

D.what repairs he had already carried out had not proved successful.65.The writer’s house is now surrounded by a jungle because _____ .A.his wife was not prepared to let him buy a new lawn mowerB.The lawn mower is buried somewhere in deep grass.C.The writer wanted to let the grass grow.

D.he lost several pieces of the mower in the process of repairing it

第二节:下面文章中有5处(第66 – 70题)需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各段意思的小标题,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。

In the game of life, if it often seems like you’re on the losing end of things, you’re not alone.Life can be one giant conundrum(难解的问题)filled with upsand downs. When you feel like you’re experiencing more downs than ups, sometimes it helps to get a little tough love once in a while. That’s why weput together this list of harsh(残酷的)truths that will help you grow.A.The first step is always the hardest.

B.You can’t always be in control of everything.C.Life isn’t fair.

D.Not everyone will support you along the way.

E.You are the only thing holding yourself back from greatness.F.You can’t accomplish great things without taking great risks.

66. Life will hand you lemons, often when you least expect it.The sooner youembrace this harsh truth, the better prepared you’ll be to handle toughsituations that are sure to arise.67. Here’s another harsh truth many people have trouble grasping: if you don’t take risks you will have a lot harder time accomplishing what you want in life.People who truly change the world are the biggest risk takers. They’re the ones who are willing to put everything on the line and fail for something they believe in.And they treat each failure as an opportunity to grow and get better.68. In life, there’s no shortage of doubters, haters, and pessimists.Overcomingthis harsh truth is simple: don’t listen.Choose to stick with your guns, trustyour instincts, and forget about people who don’t support your goals andpassions.69. Let’s face it: changing bad habits is tough.Research proves it.Chinesephilosopher Lao Tzu once said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins witha single step.” So if you want to change something, start with babysteps.Take a small action–any action–and grow from there.70. Listen, letting go is hard, especially if you’re a go-getter.But if you wantto continue to grow, there are times when you need to let go your controlon everything and let things unfold how they’re meant to be.This doesn’tmean your mentality for everything should be “wait and hope.” You can stillstrive for greatness, but put the work in and then let go with complete faiththat the universe will make things right for you. You’ll be amazed at how wellit works.
