After the long winter vocation, it’s a brand new semester, and I hope that all of you can make big progress in this term. Today we’ll begin the first class of this semester, and the text in the first unit is titled “I Have Learned So Much”, which is written by a foreigner staying in China. Can you recall how you felt when you left your family and came to this college for the first time? Maybe that experience could help you understand this text more easily. Now let’s look at the passage and find out how the author describes his living experience in China and what he has learned from the experience. 【本讲课程的内容】 Step 1 Listening warm-up 1. Explain to students the new words in the listening material: brochure, geographic and change for the better. 2. Give students two minutes to look at the questions to be answered. 3. Play the tape, and help students find out the answers to these questions. 4. Play the tape for the second time, and let students listen to it without looking at their books. Step 2 New words and expressions study 1. likewise: a. in the same way; also 同样,亦 e.g. The dream of young people is to grow old, and it is likewise the dream of their parents to relive youth. b. [sentence adverb]used to introduce a point similar or related to one just made [用于引出一与前述情况相似或相关的情况]同样 e.g. You will forget the bad things that have happened in the past. Likewise, I will forget what you have done to me. 2. insight: [mass noun]the capacity to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of a person or thing 洞察力,洞悉力, 深刻的见解 e.g. He is a man of great insight. 他是个很有见识的人。

(一般作 be accompanied) be present or occur at the same time as (something else) 伴随,与„一起发生 The illness is often accompanied by nausea. 此病常伴有恶心。 5. tug [with obj.] pull (something) hard or suddenly 用力(或猛地)拖,拉 She tugged off her boots. 她用力拔下靴子。 [no obj.] He tugged at Tom's coat sleeve. 他用力拉了一下汤姆的外衣袖。 常用词组:tug of love (Brit. informal) a dispute over the custody of a child (英,非正式)孩子监护权的争夺;“爱之拔河” 6. enhance [with obj.] intensify, increase, or further improve the quality, value, or extent of[as adj.](enhanced) 提高„的质量(或价值、程度) e.g. His refusal does nothing to enhance his reputation. 他的回绝无助于提高他的声誉。 The growth of a city often enhances the value of land close to it. 城市的发展常常会提高其附近的地价。 7. figure out a. 计算出,解决 Could you help me figure out this problem? 你能帮我解决这问题吗? 坚持,坚决要求 e.g. She insisted on leaving at once. 她坚持立刻就走。 The teacher insisted on all the homework being handed in on Monday. 老师坚持要求所有作业都要在星期一交上来。 Step 3 The main idea and purpose of the text Ask students to read the text and try to summarize the main idea and purpose of the text: 1) Main idea: The author has learned a great deal from his students and warm-hearted strangers in Beijing. 2) Purpose: To tell the readers how the author has come to have a positive impression of the Chinese people: from both students on the campus and strangers off the campus. 【本讲课程的小结】 In today’s class, we mainly studied some new words. There are some we’d better remember and know how to use actively, such as insight, enhance, and accompany. After that, we have summarized the main idea and purpose of the text.
