When we think of green buildings, we tend to think of new ones – the kind of high-tech, solar-paneled masterpieces that make the covers of architecture magazines. But the U.S. has more than 100 million existing homes, and it would be __41__ wasteful to tear them all down and __42__ them with greener versions. An enormous amount of energy and resources went into the construction of those houses. And it would take an average of 65 years for the reduced carbon emissions from a new energy-efficient home to make up for the resources __43__ by destroying an old one. So in the broadest sense, the greenest home is the one that has already been built. But at the same time, nearly half of U. S. carbon emissions come from heating, cooling and __44__ our homes, offices and other buildings. \"You can't deal with climate change without dealing with __45__ buildings,\" says Richard Moe, the president of the National Trust.

With some exceptions, the oldest homes tend to be the __46__ energy-efficient. Houses built before 1939 use about 50% more energy per square foot than those built after 2000, mainly due to the tiny cracks and gaps that expand over time and let in more outside air.

Fortunately, there are a __47__ number of relatively simple changes that can green older homes, from __48__ ones like Lincoln's Cottage to your own postwar home. And efficiency upgrades can save more than just the earth; they can help __49__ property owners from rising power costs.

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged, \"Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.\" How right they were!

\"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,\" wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang on there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, \"I can do it!\" when others shout, \"No, you can't.\" It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn't let up on her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.

We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, whatever their age. At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, joy would reappear, in his eyes. As author and poet Samuel Ulman once wrote, \"Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.\"

Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power. Patricia Mellratl, retired director of the Missouri Repertory Theater in Kansas City, was once asked where she got her enthusiasm. She replied, “My father, long ago, told me, „I never made a penny until I stopped working for money.”

If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a hobby. Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended bouts of depression that had plagued her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, \"I am tempted to call Layton a genius.\"

We can't afford to waste tears on \"might-have-been.\" We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after \"what-can-be.\" We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses -- finding pleasure in the fragrance of a back-yard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, the enchanting beauty of a rainbow.

65. How many examples are given in the passage to show the importance of enthusiasm? A. Four B. Five C. Six D. Seven

66. Which of the following can best explain the underlined sentence in the second paragraph? A. Enthusiastic people never consider money and fame.

B. Enthusiasm can give you courage and strength in difficult times. C. Enthusiastic people can gain great wealth, honor and power. D. Enthusiasm will surely lead you to success.

67. The author mentions pianist Pablo Casals in the third paragraph to show that _________.

A. enthusiasm can give people inspiration B. music can arouse people‟s enthusiasm C. enthusiasm can make people feel young D. enthusiasm can keep people healthy

68. The author holds the view that _________. A. enthusiasm is more important than experience

B. enthusiasm can give people more success and fame C. enthusiasm will keep people young forever D. enthusiasm can make people enjoy life 【难度分析】:本篇文章难度中等,但着重于考查学生的理解推理能力,需要找到相应的细节句子进行分析。

About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table, I couldn‟t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked: \"So, how have you been?\" And the boy--who could not have been more than seven or eight years old--replied. \"Frankly, I've been feeling a little depressed lately.''

This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn‟t find out we were “depressed” until we were in high school.

The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don‟t seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.

Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists, Why?

Human development is based not only on innate (天生的) biological states, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.

In the last 30 years. however, a secret-revelation (揭示) machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television, Television passes information, and indiscriminately (不加区分地), to all viewers alike, be they children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.

Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practices. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.

72. According to the author, feeling depressed is ________.

A) a sure sign of a psychological problem in a child B) something hardly to be expected in a young child C) an inevitable has of children's mental development

D) a mental scale present in all humans, including children Key: B

73. Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world ________.

A) through contact with society B) gradually and under guidance

C) naturally and by biological instinct D) through exposure to social information Key: B

74. The phenomenon that today‟s children seem adult

like is attributed by the author to ________.

A) the widespread influence of television B) the poor arrangement of teaching content

C) the fast pace of human intellectual development D) the constantly rising standard of living Key: A

75. Why is the author in favor of communication through print for children?

A) It enables children to gain more social information. B) It develops children's interest in reading and writing. C) It helps children to memorize and practice more. D) It can control what children are to learn. Key: C

Section C 5% A. Online education saves money B. Using information online at home C. A new approach to learning D. Online life is unavoidable E. Education plays a very important role F. The convenience of getting Internet education _______ The Internet is a new approach to learning. Many people believe learning by means of the Internet is more successful than the traditional form of teaching. The Internet allows schools to develop a large amount of learning material that is accessible for students online anything. There are so many choices of courses and subjects or time frames that completing a program is not an issue for students anymore. We found that online education gives us excellent sources of information, saves our time, money and it is extremely convenient.

_______ Not long ago we used to go to the library every time we needed information and spent hours searching for the right sources. Today there is a \"library\" in our house and it is available 24 hours a day. From my personal experience, as a first time mother, I found that using information online is very helpful. While I am at home with my baby, I am still able to connect to the world and search for any educational materials I need. I am also able to exchange thoughts, opinions and information with my classmates without leaving my house.

_______ The Internet is not only a big information provider but also saves us money and time. People are predicting that education will be much cheaper in the future because of Internet access to information. The cost of land, buildings and wages for teachers are continuously increasing and that makes conventional education more expensive than online education. In addition, regular courses (offline) depend heavily on books and other traditional paper-based materials while online education posts lectures, notes, and assignments electronically and that saves thousands of dollars every year. There is also no need for the classroom itself because most programs online require participation in discussion and group projects via e-mail.

_______ The Internet classes and courses are also very convenient because there are no physical restrictions as in conventional education like space and time limitations. First, in classroom-based

education there is a limitation on the number of students that are allowed in each class while Internet education is available to everyone because a classroom is not an issue there. Students don't have to struggle in order to register for the classes they like. In addition, there is no time limitation so students can repeat exercises as many times as they need.

_______ Education will spread out more and more online and students will have more choices on how and when to take their courses and classes. They will easily be able to take the classes they want and repeat material on the Internet as many times as they need. The Internet is a wonderful opportunity to have a good time but also to learn something in a convenient and less expensive way. In my opinion online life in the future is simply inevitable. What personal qualities are desirable in a teacher? I think the following would be generally accepted.

First, the teacher‟s personality should be lively and attractive. This does not rule out people who are plain-looking, or even ugly, because many such people have great personal charm.

Secondly, it is not merely desirable but essential for a teacher to have a genuine capacity for sympathy, a capacity to tune in to the minds and feelings of other people, especially the minds and feelings of children. Closely related with this is the capacity to be tolerant--not, indeed, of what is wrong, but of the weaknesses and immaturity of human nature which induce (诱导) people, and again especially children, to make mistakes.

Thirdly, I hold it essential for a teacher to be both intellectually and morally honest. This means that he will be aware of his intellectual strengths and limitations, and will have thought about and decided upon the moral principles by which his life shall be guided. There is no contradiction (矛盾) in my going on to say that a teacher should be a bit of an actor. That is part of the technique of teaching, which demands that every now and then a teacher should be able to put on an act to enliven (使生动) a lesson, correct a fault, or award praise.

A teacher must be capable of infinite patience. This, I may say, is largely a matter of self-discipline and self-training for we are none of us born like that.

Finally, I think a teacher should have the kind of mind which always wants to go on learning. Teaching is a job at which one will never be perfect; there is always something more to learn about it. There are three principal objects of study: the subjects which the teacher is teaching; the methods by which the subjects can best be taught to the particular pupils in the classes he is teaching; and---by far the most important---the children, young people, or adults to whom they are to be taught. The two foundational principles of British education today are that education is education of the whole person, and that it is best acquired through full and active co-operation between two persons, the teacher and the learner.

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)

81. Plain-looking teachers can also be admired by their students if they have . Key: great personal charm. 82. How can a teacher acquire infinite

patience? . Key: Through self-discipline and self-training.

83. According to the passage, what are the three main objects of study for teacher?

.

Key: The subjects, the teaching methods and the learners. 84. Education cannot be best acquired if the teacher and the learner . Key: do not co-operate fully and actively. I translation
