In many countries today, laws protect wildlife. In India, the need for such protection was realized centuries ago.
3
About 300 BC, all Indian writers described forests that were somewhat like national parks today. The game of killing beasts was carefully supervised(监督).Some animals were fully protected.Within the forest, nobody was allowed to cut wood for building, burn wood for fire, or catch animals for their fur.Animals that became dangerous to human visitors were caught or killed outside the park, so that other animals would not become uneasy.
The need for wildlife protection is greater now than ever before.About a thousand species of animals are in danger of extinction, and the rate at which they are being destroyed has increased.Taking mammals for example, the speed of extinction is now about one species every fifty years from AD 1 to 1800, but now it is about one species every year.Everywhere, men are trying to solve the problem of preserving wildlife while caring for the world's growing population.

Three years ago, FFI, an international conservation(保护) organization, gave the warning that in Vietnam the then 150 elephants were in danger of becoming extinct.
Though the poachers(偷猎者) still cannot make elephants disappear completely from Vietnam, extinction is a foreseeable thing, if Vietnam cannot do more to protect its elephants.Frank Momberg, a representative of FFI, undertook the job of building an elephant training centre right in the central province of Dak Lak, believed to be the mainland for elephants in Vietnam. At that time, people were optimistic(乐观的) about the project's possibility, believing that this would help the wildlife conservation plan much.
However, in September last year, Mark McDonald, a conservationist, stated that the groups of conservationists all have “surrendered” in the fight to protect Vietnam's elephants. An elephant conservation centre has been built in the National Park in Dak Lak Province, becoming the living place for 29 elephants.
However, the small scale(规模) of the centre and the limited money do not allow the officers here to prevent the illegal hunting to protect the lives of elephants.
Two weeks ago, a couple of elephants were killed right in the forest belonging to the shelter. The officers here discovered the dead body of a male elephant with its tusks cut.Forest protectors are now worried that the death of a male elephant would make it difficult for the elephants to maintain the race.Director of the Dak Lak National Park said the elephant illegal hunting had been developing so rapidly.Six male elephants have been killed so far this year.
The strong economic development since early 1990s has led to the narrowing of the living environment for elephants. The forests, which were once their habitats, have been replaced by rice, coffee and rubber farms, factories, water dams and roads.Meanwhile, the large forests with precious wood have been cut down for money.
5.What does the author intend to tell in the passage? A.Vietnam's elephants are in great danger. B.Most elephants are killed for food in Vietnam. C.Measures have been taken to care for elephants. D.Vast forests are being cut down in Vietnam.

7.The conservationists have given in because ________. A.the National Park covers too small an area B.there are only 29 elephants alive in the centre C.the illegal hunting happens frequently D.the local officers killed the elephants Ⅶ语法填空
