第三部分 阅读理解

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C和D中选出最佳选项。 A

Hugh Troy, a well-known artist, was a very interesting and clever person who spent most of his life playing tricks for the joy of it.

One winter, while a student at Cornell University in New York, Troy got hold of a very old and ugly wastebasket with a real rhinoceros (犀牛) foot as its base. He filled it with metal weights and tied 30 feet of clothes-line to either side. Later one night he and a friend carried it out onto campus, pulling the lines straight between them. Every few feet they would lower it into the snow, their own footprints so far away as to raise no suspicions (怀疑).

The next morning someone noticed the prints and invited learned professors to come and have

a look. Excitedly, they followed the rhinoceros tracks. Then they were led onto the ice covering Beeb Lake, which connected to where the school got its drinking water. There the tracks ended in a huge hole.

It was said that half the population of Cornell stopped drinking tap water. Those who continued to drink it insisted that it tasted like rhinoceros.

1. What was Troy doing when the story began?A.He was working as an artist. B.He was studying in the university. C.He was examining a rhinoceros foot. D.He was doing rhinoceros experiments.

2. Why did Troy fill the basket with metal weights?A.Make it easy to tie the lines. B.Get rid of these useless things. C.Make it heavy enough for prints. D.Support the base of the old basket.

3. Why did someone ask learned professors to examine the prints?A.They knew where the rhinoceros existed in winter. B.They might be able to explain what had happened. C.They were looking for this animal just then. D.They enjoyed following animal tracks.

4. Troy wanted people to believe that a rhinoceros ______.A.might appear on campus again B.might exist in this area all the time C.had dug a hole for its winter home D.had fallen into the lake through a hole B

American society does not treat nap friendly. In fact, says David Dinges, a sleep specialist (专家) at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine, \"There's even a prohibition against admitting we need sleep\". Nobody wants to be caught napping or found asleep at work. To quote a proverb: \"Some sleep five hours, nature requires seven, laziness nine and wickedness eleven.\" \"Wrong. The way not to fall asleep at work is to take naps when you need them. We have to totally change our attitude toward napping.\" says Dr. William Dement of Stanford University, the godfather of sleep research.

Last year a **mission led by Dement identified an \"American sleep debt\" which one member said was as important as the national debt. **mission was concerned about the dangers of sleepiness: people causing industrial accidents or falling asleep while driving. This may be why we have a new sleep policy in the White House. According to recent reports, President Clinton is trying to take a half hour snooze (打盹) every afternoon.

About 60 percent of American adults nap when given the opportunity. We seem to have \"a mid-afternoon quiet phase\" also called \"a secondary sleep gate\". Sleeping 15 minutes to two hours in the early afternoon can reduce stress and make us refreshed. Clearly, we were born to nap. We don't nap to replace shut-eye or to prepare for a night shift. Rather, we snack on sleep, whenever, wherever and at whatever time we feel like it. I myself have napped in buses, cars, planes and on boats, on floors and beds, and in libraries, offices and museums.

1. It is commonly accepted in American society that too much sleep is ______.A.unreasonable B.criminal C.harmful D.costly

2. The research done by the **mission shows that Americans ______.A.don't like to take naps B.are terribly worried about their national debt C.think sleeping less is good for them D.have caused many industrial and traffic accidents because of sleepiness

3. The purpose of this article is to ______.A.warn us of the wickedness of napping B.explain the danger of sleepiness C.discuss the side effects of napping D.convince the reader of the necessity of napping

4. The \"American sleep debt\" (Para. 3) is the result of ______.A.the traditional misconception about sleep B.the new sleep policy of the Clinton Administration C.the rapid development of American industry D.the Americans' worry about the danger of sleepiness C

People often show their feelings by the body positions they adopt. These can contradict (同…矛盾) what you are saying, especially when you are trying to disguise the way you feel. For example, a **mon defensive position, assumed when people feel threatened in some way, is to put your arm or arms across your body. This is a way of shielding yourself from a threatening situation. This shielding action can be disguised as adjusting one's coif (束发帽) or watch strap. Leaning back in your chair especially with your arms folded is not only defensive, it's also a way of showing your disapproval, of a need to distance yourself from the rest of **pany.

A position which betrays (显示) an aggressive attitude is to avoid looking directly at the person you are speaking to. On the other hand, approval and desire to cooperate are shown by copying the position of the person you are speaking to. This shows that you agree or are willing to agree with someone. The position of one's feet also often shows the direction of people's thoughts. For example, feet or a foot pointing towards the door can indicate that a person wishes to leave the room. The direction in which your foot points can also show which of the people in the room you feel most sympathetic towards, even when you are not speaking directly to that person. 1. Body positions are used to show ______.A.people's intentions B.people's feelings C.what people said D.what people assumed

2. To put your arms across your body is to show ______.A.a threatening position B.that you are angry C.that you are defending yourself D.that you are indifferent to what has happened

3. To copy the position of the person you are talking to is to show ______.A.your disapprove of him B.that you admire him very much C.that you agree with him and want to cooperate with him D.that you are willing to follow after him

4. \"To avoid looking directly at the person you are speaking to\" indicates you ______.A.are very shy and timid B.don't like to talk to that person C.are willing to be inferior to

that person D.are aggressive and impolite to that person D

Sometime in the next century, the familiar early newspaper on the front gate will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. You'll get up and turn on **puter newspaper just like switching on TV. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You'll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own **puter if you like. These are among the predictions (预测) **munication experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers would unite print and broadcast reporting, offering news and analysis with video images of news events.

Most of the technology is available now, but convincing (说服) more people that they don't need paper to read a newspaper is the next step. But resistance to computer newspaper may be stronger from within journalism. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of journalists and publishers will have to die off before the next generation realizes that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of traditional newspapers unavoidable.

Despite technological advances, it could take decades to replace newsprint **puter screens. It might take 30 to 40 years to complete the changeover because people need to **puters and because newspapers have established financial (财经的) interests in the paper industry.

1. What is the best title for this passage?A.Computer Newspapers are Well Liked B.Newspapers of the Future Will Likely Be on Computer C.Newspapers Are Out of Fashion D.New Communications Technology

2. It might take 30 to 40 years **puter newspapers to replace traditional newspapers, because ______.A.it is technologically impossible now B.computer newspapers are too expensive C.there is strong resistance from both the general population and professional journalists D.traditional newspapers are easy to read

3. Journalists are not eager to **puter newspapers, because ______.A.they don't know how to **puters B.they **puter newspapers take too much time to read C.they think the new technology is bad D.they have been trained to write for traditional newspapers

4. We can infer from the passage that ______.A.all technological changes are good B.all technologies will eventually replace old ones C.new technologies will eventually replace old ones D.traditional newspapers are here to stay for another century E
